The link between teacher buy-in & intentions to stay
A new research paper from Professor John Jerrim (UCL) using data from the TEP pilot (2022-23) found that schools with strong buy in to their strategy from their teachers, also had high commitment to the organisation.
What to expect
Teachers who feel aligned with and supportive of their school leadership’s strategy are significantly more likely to intend to remain in their current school.
While workload, pay, and relationships with colleagues all matter, teacher buy-in shows a stronger association with retention intentions than these traditional factors.
Fostering teacher buy-in should be a priority for school leaders – clear communication, involving staff in decision-making, and building trust can improve teacher stability and reduce turnover.
