A white paper case study
TEP is a named case study in the DfE white paper Every Child Achieving and Thriving (February 2026), which sets the expectation that every school is monitoring pupil engagement and belonging by 2029.
Validated, published research
Our research is led by Professor John Jerrim of UCL, drawing on national data from pupils and employees across England. Reports are published throughout the year, strengthening the evidence base on engagement.

About our sessions
Our expertise is engagement: how pupils, employees, families, leaders and governors experience school, and what those experiences tell us about outcomes, culture and improvement. Sessions draw on TEP’s national research, regional patterns and evidence from schools, with content shaped around the theme, audience and context of each event.

Recent conferences, trust events and education networks where TEP has been invited to contribute research and insights to sector discussions.
The National Institute of Teaching
A bespoke session for Fellows on the Aspiring CEO Programme. National findings from TEP's Leadership and Governance research, including where boards' confidence outpaces what pupils and employees report, set the context for Fellows to explore their own trust and school data.
Association of School and College Leaders
A keynote at ASCL's Conference for Pastoral Leaders drew on termly national pupil data to explore engagement and attendance. It showed how engagement scores fall before absence appears in the data, and what that means for which pupils pastoral teams prioritise.
Invictus Educuation Trust
A session on the move from Year 6 to Year 7, using national engagement data to show which pupils are affected and when. TEP's census picks up a clear dip in Year 7 engagement by the spring term, which gives leaders a window to act before it surfaces in attendance or behaviour.
SWIFT Summer Conference
Delivered with Colyton Foundation, a session on what engagement data adds to the picture of attainment for pupils facing disadvantage. It drew on TEP's regional analysis of South West schools, comparing the experience of FSM-eligible pupils in the South West and rest of England.
Billesley Research School
A workshop outlining what we mean by 'engagement’, how it moves across year groups and pupil groups nationally, and the research evidencing it as a lead indicator. The latter section focused on one school's engagement data, triangulating employee and pupil responses so groups could explore the trends, and discuss what actions should be taken.
Whole Education
A webinar for those overseeing attendance at school and trust level, drawing on TEP's national census. It set out: what the data shows about the gender gap in engagement, the impact of poor peer relationships, how patterns slightly shift for primary and secondary, and what this means for attendance leads.
Education Workforce Day
A session for an HR audience on how employee engagement is measured, and the research behind it as a lead indicator of retention and job satisfaction. Case studies from schools showed what leaders did once they had the data, and where the results changed a decision.
Barking & Dagenham School Improvement Partnership
A session on employee engagement and why employee and pupil engagement move together. The latter half focused on London regional data, setting out where employee engagement runs ahead of the national benchmark and where the pressures are sharper.
Festival of Education
A session sharing a first look at findings from TEP’s national Leadership and Governance study, exploring the experiences of school leaders, governors and trustees. It looked at what makes engagement data useful at board level, how national comparison gives scores meaning, and the questions boards should ask of the data they are shown.
